My father’s grandfather, Frederick Higgins, married Emma Cornelia Simpson. There has been no verbal history from this line, all facts coming instead from research. It has been somewhat “interesting”, as the names of the men in this line are often the same, making it difficult to distinguish who was who at times. So I’ve given some nicknames to help tell them apart.

The Lineage
Richard Lee Higgins Jr. => Richard Lee Higgins Sr. => Milton Higgins => Frederick Higgins (Botts) => Emma Cornelia Simpson

Emma Cornelia Simpson
Born: 1875(?) in Alexandria Virginia USA
Married: Feb 5, 1896 to Frederick Joseph Higgins (Bott)
Died: Nov 5, 1959 in Alexandria Virginia USA

According to a marriage record, she was born in 1875 in Alexandria Virginia and married to a F.J. Higgins at the age of 21. Her father was Gilbert.

And at the other end, find-a-grave shows a lot more information. She died in Alexandria on 5 Nov 1959. Her birth date is listed as Nov 1876, which kinda falls in line with a census. And she is buried in Bethel Cemetery, in a section right next to my Higgins family, and also next to the Simpson plot. (I have visited her grave). Her father is listed as Gilbert Simpson, her mother as Laura Virginia (Jenkins) Simpson, and her spouse as Frederick Joseph Higgins.

Gilbert Simpson (The Younger)
Born: Mar 11, 1844
Married: Laura Virginia Jenkins
Died: Feb 26, 1921

According to Find-a-grave … Son of Gilbert and Margarett Simpson. Husband of Laura V. Jenkins. Although his grave marker has his day of death as the 26th, the death certificate indicates he died on February 27th.

Gilbert Simpson (The Older)
Born: Sep 15, 1808
Married: Margaret Ann ____
Died: Jul 29, 1880 in Alexandria Virginia

William Simpson (Jr.)
Born: 1774-1779
Married: January 17 1798 to Joanna Lightfoot (First Presbyterian Church Fairfax County)
Died: by 18-Jan-1832

William Simpson

Joseph Simpson

John Simpson

M. Elizabeth _____

The Difficulities
Originally, I had the below lineage based on census records and such. But stumbling onto other research, now I’m pretty sure I had it very wrong, including somehow creating a tie in to a Lyles family. (Some research into Gilbert’s wife Margaret’s suggested it, but no sources).

  • Thomas Simpson
  • m. Unknown
    • Thomas Simpson
    • m. Elizabeth Willan (see Willan Family)
      • John Simpson
      • m. Elizabeth Young (see Young Family)
        • Gilbertus Simpson
        • m. Elizabeth Williams (see Williams Family)
          • Gilbert Simpson (The Original)
          • m. Rosanna Mason (see Mason Family)
            • William Simpson

The Mason family is very well documented, and I do show a Gilbert Simpson married to a Rosanna Mason. However, they only had children: Ann and French (named after relatives it appears). My original assumption/tree had my William as part of that, and it’s surely not correct. That William is not my William.

Check out this story from Robert C. Neibling. It’s pretty detailed.

Misc Sources
There are a number (21) sources about this family that helped shape this page. There are mostly census records, death registers, and photos of headstones. To many to document individually, but all are available in my archives for further research. The headstones are in the plot right next to the Higgins family in Bethel Cemetery in Alexandria Virginia and were taken by me.
